Opposites

A big ball and a small ball. What is the opposite of hot?

For ages 4–7 · Logic, English · Free · No ads

What your child learns

  • Understanding 28 everyday describing words: big, small, tall, short, long, clean, dirty, new, old...
  • Knowing that opposites are two words with reverse meanings, like hot and cold, open and closed
  • Finding the opposite of a given word
  • Remembering where cards are while matching pairs
  • Switching to the Vietnamese voice to learn the same pairs in Vietnamese

How to play

  1. Press "Play now", listen to the question and tap the right picture, for example "Find the hot drink". On a computer, keys 1–3 work too.
  2. For "What is the opposite of big?", listen to and read the word on top, then pick the picture that means the opposite. One of the three pictures shows the word itself (a big ball), so your child has to understand the word, not just find the same object.
  3. For the card board, flip two cards that are opposites, for example a big ball picture and the word card "small" (each word is read aloud when flipped; at the top level every card is a word). Cards that don't match flip back. On a computer, use Tab and Enter, or the number keys.
  4. Getting it right the first time, or clearing a board with few wrong flips, earns a star.

For parents

  • Both pictures in a pair show the same thing and differ only in what is being learned, so the difference is easy to see.
  • A question never shows a picture that could pass for the opposite by mistake: when asking for the opposite of "big", there is no "short" picture.
  • "Short" is the opposite of both "tall" and "long", so those two pairs never appear in the same question.
  • Play at home: "This tea is hot. What about the ice water?", "Is the door open or closed?".
