Tell the Time

The short hand shows the hour, the long hand the minutes. What time is it?

For ages 5–8 · Math · Free · No ads

What your child learns

  • Telling the hour hand (short) from the minute hand (long)
  • Reading o'clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and five-minute times
  • Seeing why the hour hand sits between two numbers at half past
  • Turning the hands to set a clock to a given time

How to play

  1. Listen to "What time is it?" and tap the card with the right time.
  2. When asked to set the clock, drag a hand (or use the turn buttons), then press "Done".
  3. Turn the minute hand past 12 and the hour hand moves on too, just like a real clock.
  4. A right answer shows the digital time and reads it aloud.

For parents

  • It starts with o'clock only, then adds half past, quarter past, quarter to and five-minute steps as your child improves.
  • Compare with a real clock at home: "Which number is the short hand pointing at?"
  • After two wrong tries there is a hint: the right card blinks or faded hands show where to go.
